On a sunny and beautiful December morning in Orlando, I am heading to what many would consider the Golf Mecca of the Caribbean – Montego Bay, Jamaica! I have been to Montego Bay before, but this trip is different for all of the right reasons; plentiful golf, sun-kissed beaches, jerk chicken layered over rice & peas, and unlimited bottles of Ting and Ginger Beer! During this upcoming trip I envisioned golf every day with fellow enthusiasts from the US and Toronto as we experience what Montego Bay really has to offer. Arriving to the Montego Bay Airport is always a unique experience, but somehow I knew this trip would be different. I typically always forget to bring something, but this time I planned better: Golf Balls-Check, Comfortable Golf Shoes-Check, Sun Block-Check, knowledge of the local Jamaican golf courses-check, but hmmm… did I bring my A Game (we will have to see). I will admit early in this article that I suffer from a not-so -rare disorder known as MGPD aka “Multiple Golfer Personality Disorder”; I knew my experience this week would be interesting. Let’s just hope that my 2007 Tiger Woods personality shows up to play and not my 2010 Tiger personality!
Upon my arrival, my first warm smile of the day came as I approached the customs officer who asked me if this was my first trip to Montego Bay. I smiled and said, “No”. She promptly responded, “Welcome home, Mr. DeLavallade!” That small gesture of kindness made my trip feel even more special. After moving through the airport with lightning speed, we arrived to the Ritz-Carlton Golf and Spa Resort in Rose Hall. The Ritz-Carlton staff here at Rose Hall is more impressive than any hotel that I have ever visited in the Caribbean. Their attentiveness and willing to go the extra mile is just the norm for them. I was well-received during my visit. LaToya and Odette at the front desk along with Preston and Keisha at the Jerk Center are just a few of the names that I remember as they displayed professionalism and courtesy beyond compare. I continued to be impressed as I enjoyed the beach scenery while people-watching on a barstool at the Jerk Center. The early evening hours were approaching and my “food coma” from the Jerk sausage and rice was beginning to settle in. I noticed heavy traffic of golfers this week as my trip coincided with the closing day of the LIME Jamaica Open at the Half Moon Golf Course and the beginning of the Jamaica Invitational Pro-Am also known as “Annie’s Revenge.”
Day 1: Our first day of golf was at the beautiful and world renowned White Witch Golf Course. This is by far one of the toughest and most scenic courses in the Caribbean because of its slope, unique layout, and tough greens. This Par-71, 6,859 yard beauty of a golf course has been carved through a very mountainous area in the Rose Hall district of Montego Bay. Additionally, some of the special features are the 16 holes of calming views overlooking the Caribbean Sea that invoke that “Whooosaaaa” feeling in most golfers. A few holes also boast a birds-eye view of the recently-built and stunning Palmyra Resort and Spa. Mike Cole and Adrian have the White Witch course running like a machine! As I approached the 1st Hole, my caddie says, “Are you ready?” and I am thinking to myself …”are you ready to go running all over this course to find my ball?”. The tee box on #1 is by far the more stunning backdrop I have ever experienced with hues of blues and greens that seem to go on forever. I gathered myself and shared with my caddie the details of my slight disorder. We shared a big smile and a fist pump as he knew exactly what I meant. As I surveyed this first hole, it looked more like a par-7 rather than a par-5 as this 534-yard hole appeared to be closer to 834 yards away. With calm nerves, I counted down from 4 to 1, started with a smooth back and strong follow-through, and well let’s just say I impressed the caddie, my group, and myself with some of the shots I was able to pull off. Day 2: Interesting day as we were able to play two courses; Ironshore Golf and Country Club and Cinnamon Hill Golf Course. Ironshore was a last-minute addition based on the request of the new management. Ironshore Golf Club which was previously managed by SuperClubs has been dormant for over a year or so. Based on the plans that we discussed with the Director of Golf, this course will be an awesome course that will be moderately priced ($70). The course played very extremely well, but is still in need of some TLC as the fairways were a little fuzzy, but the greens were in good shape. This will be a great track and will definitely help get the rust off when you come to Mo Bay to swing. We left after having one of the best tuna sandwiches of my life, and headed to Cinnamon Hill. As we arrived, we are greeted by the Director of Golf, Robert Ames (brother and former caddie for PGA Pro Stephen Ames). He impressed us as a great guy who has done a fine job with this immaculate golf course that borders the Rose Hall Resort and Spa. Cinnamon Hill course offers a wealth of rich history as the scenery includes vintage aqueducts and burial plots. Any movie buff will appreciate the picturesque waterfall on Hole #15 which was featured in James Bond movie “Live and Let Die.” This course is a true golf “experience” and is a must while in Montego Bay! Day 3: On Day 3, we were provided the opportunity to play the Tryall Golf Club where we were quickly greeted by the staff and swept away to the first tee. The service upon arriving was impressive and continued throughout the day through an early dinner. Every hole had something unique to offer, as the layout from our tees provided us with views of the property that we didn’t know existed. The design is one of those “risk/reward” layouts where if you are feeling froggy, you can pull out the driver or step on a 3 wood to play it safe. The front nine offers two totally different experiences as the front nine borders the Caribbean Sea and the back weaves its way through the hillsides of the property with views of stunning villas. Playing golf at the Tryall Club is a private golf experience, but you can create the ultimate golf experience by acquiring Villa Lolita, the Anticipation Villa, and others for short or long stay with friends. The only course that I did not get to play was Half Moon on this trip, but based on the excitement and scores at the LIME Jamaica Open, I know my experience would have been as distinctive as the others. All in all, the experience was exceptional and I can honestly say that Montego Bay is by far an awe-inspiring destination for true golf fanatics. This one of its kind experience will be forever embedded in my mind, as one that will be hard to match.
