Almenara, which opened in 1998, has three nine-hole loops, each of which is the brainchild of local architect Dave Thomas. There is something particularly inviting about a golf course which opens with a challenging par-5. There are lines of pine trees stretching out in every direction and the view out over the Mediterranean is spectacular. The next hole (par-3) is played to an elevated green framed by pine trees. Care must be taken not to over-hit. A mere 8.8 yards behind the putting surface, the ground runs downwards into a hazard. The par-5 fourth features Los Lagos Lake which gobbles up golf balls at an alarming rate. The par-4 fifth measures 436-yards and is shaped like a boomerang between a forest of trees. The seventh, a par-3 measuring 180.4 yards, is a delight to play. The tee shot is across a lake to a large guitar shaped green surrounded by trees. You have the option of playing all 27 of these spectacular holes. Have lunch on the veranda, overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean.
